Monkeys in my neighborhood

When I was talking to my friend Brandon about a month ago, he mentioned that there were a couple of monkeys who live in town, often found in the garbage-y yard near Alma Bar. Ever since then, I'd been keeping an eye out for them. And of course with my luck, I never saw them. My guess is that the monkeys wanted to be left alone and so decided to stay away from me.

A couple of weeks ago, Brandon called me to let me know that they've been spotted near the sports shop on the way to the market. Extremely excited that this was my lucky day, I quickly slid my feet into my sandals and ran out the door with my camera to go on a monkey hunt. But when I got to the sports shop, the monkeys had already left!

Being all determined to find those little suckers, I started asking the people in the nearby shops if they've seen the monkeys ( by asking, I mean me making weird hand motions and asking people if they've seen "les petite animaux qui manger les bananes" since I didn't know the word for monkey in Kinyarwanda or in French. I finally found a nice woman who understood what I was asking about, and she instructed me to follow this girl down a dirt road and into someone's private yard... and there was a monkey! He (she?) was sitting on the wall next to the house and was quickly peeling the layers away from a cob of corn. He then proceeded to pick off each kernel and eat them, one by one, and in such an adorable monkey way. Soon after he was done with is meal, another furry little monkey came by and chilled on the wall before disappearing into some trees. So cute!

And of course, but the time I was done looking at the monkeys, I had a small crowd of people looking at me, the crazy muzungu who is stalking the local monkeys in somone's private yard...
